Spread Eagle

The Spread Eagle
71 Wandsworth High Street
Wandsworth
SW18 2PT

The Spread Eagle is a Renaissance-style building situated opposite the former, Young's Brewery. The interior gives insight into how a classy pub would be viewed more than a century ago.

The three rooms inside are separated by screens and earlier in the pub's history the left-hand part would also have been subdivided -take note of multiple doors and the 'public bar' mosaic).

The room on the right was likely always a single space and a huge space it is. A staircase leads to the upper floor. Look out for the screen to the 'dining room and lounge' at the rear left which has been newly fitted.

A three-sided servery, with original back fittings and counter, connects all areas of The Spread Eagle. The back fittings feature unusual and impressive pierced work in the spandrels as well as etched glass.

Modern additions to the pub include the distinctive canopy over the main entrance.

The Spread Eagle featured on the Daytime Crawl of SW17, SW18 and SW11 in October 2004, the Evening Crawl of Battersea and Wandsworth in December 2007, the Gorringe, Graveney and Garratt: Daytime Crawl of Tooting, Earlsfield and Wandsworth in February 2010, and the From the Crimea to Death's Door via Cats, Birds and Breweries: Evening Crawl of Wandsworth and Battersea in April 2013.
