Rose & Crown

2 The Polygon,
Clapham,
SW4 0JG

Although this pub is not a listed building, it is on the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Local Inventory with an interior of local historic interest, and the description is as follows: "The main feature of interest here is the fine exterior with its Simonds livery announcing its ‘NOTED ALES & STOUT’. Behind the fine Simonds façade lies a thoroughly modern interior, though making use of traditional materials, including wood and stained glass. There is a large restaurant area to the rear.

The pub is included on Lambeth Council’s Local Heritage List and the description is as follows: “Three storey 19th C public house fronting onto The Polygon. Pub front is early 20th C terracotta coloured faience (two-toned with architraves to the openings) with broad central arched window flanked by arched doorways. In faience band over the window are the words ‘ROSE AND CROWN’ flanked by a Tudor rose and crown motif. Timber joinery with fancy fanlights to the doors. Three windows on each upper floor – f/f 4/4 sashes, s/f 3/3 sashes. Moulded cornice. Between f/f and s/f a terracotta sign reads ‘SIMONDS NOTED ALES & STOUT’”.

The Clapham Society’s The Buildings of Clapham states that the building dates from 1792 and that it has been a pub since c.1870. It also says that decorative shutters and tiling were later additions.
