47 Old Town,
Clapham,
SW4 0JL

This pub is a candidate for inclusion on CAMRA’s Local Inventory of pubs with local historic interest. The stained glass windows show evidence of its former Charrington’s ownership. The Clapham Society’s The Buildings of Clapham states that the pub dates from c.1880 and replaces an earlier pub on the site. It goes on to say “French-style decorative top with ironwork. Retains earlier sign on pediment in poor condition with cut-out sun above. This was originally in the centre of a row, but the cottages which stood on the present courtyard-garden were destroyed by Second World War bombing at the same time as the adjacent Congregational Church”.

CAMRA’s WhatPub describes the pub thus: “Victorian pub now completely opened out and decorated in restrained gastropub style, something of a landmark in the Old Town and on the weekend circuit.”
