Nelson Arms
15 Merton High Street,Merton,
SW19 1DF
This former Charrington’s pub is on CAMRA’s Local Inventory of pubs with local historic interest and the description is as follows: “The Nelson Arms is included for what is probably the most intact and spectacular Charrington's Brewery pub exterior in London, and possibly anywhere. The building occupies a corner site with a corner turret. There's the trademark Charrington's brown tiling on the ground floor, with bowed windows on both sides. Set within the tiling above the bowed window on the Merton High Street side is the name of the pub, and elsewhere the tiling includes "Charringtons" and "Ales and Stout". However, the most arresting external feature is the trio of painted tiled panels. All three panels are signed "Carters', Poole 1910"; the large one on the first floor of the Abbey Road side depicts HMS Victory and the pair on the ground floor of the Merton High Street side are of HMS Victory and Admiral the Lord Nelson.” Note also the understated trademark Charrington’s windows and the really good door lobby.
The pub is locally listed but not in a Conservation Area. It is listed in the Tile Gazetteer of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society and the Brewery History Society’s description is as follows: “A corner building with a fabulous tiled frontage on both elevations. Front fascia - 'CHARRINGTONS - THE NELSON ARMS - ALES AND STOUT'. Side fascia - 'CHARRINGTONS - ALES & STOUT'. Several pictorial tiles.” 2108]] on 20 June 2026.
