Lion & The Unicorn
The SidingsWaterloo Station
Waterloo
SE1 7BH
Although this Wetherspoon pub, housed in part of the former Eurostar terminal, is neither a statutorily nor locally listed building, it is a nominee in the current round of the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Pub Design Awards. The pub’s theme is the Festival of Britain of 1951, the centerpiece of which was the South Bank Exhibition near Waterloo station – one of the buildings was the Lion and the Unicorn Pavilion. The artworks in the pub are references to the various designs that epitomised the Festival’s theme of hope, including the doves hanging from the ceiling, the welcome mat, the Festival of Britain logo on one of the tiled panels, photographs of the Festival of Britain spaces and the jazzy carpet.
