Daylight Inn

Station Square,
Petts Wood,
BR5 1LZ.

This pub, occupying an island of its own on the north east side of Petts Wood station, is a vast inter-war, multi-roomed, roadhouse-style building in glorious mock Tudor designed for Charringtons in 1934 by Sidney Clark. The exterior has black and white half timbering and red brick with wonderful twisted chimney stacks. Inside is fielded wooden wall panelling, leaded windows, plaster ceilings and moulded plaster cornices decorated with birds and vines. Unusual embossed plaster representations of flowers such as thistles and lilies adorn the walls below the cornices. The fireplaces are of red brick, some with twisted columns. The servery has a half-timbered canopy which looks more modern but the bar-back has more convincing Tudor-arched detail. Note also the charming plaster panels in the main room depicting fairies frolicking among trees and various birds and animals, including a frog. Outside there is a Charrington Toby ceramic plaque over one of the entrance doors.

The Daylight Inn featured on the Sunny Daze: Daytime Crawl of Petts Wood, Bromley, Catford and Forest Hill in June 2012.
