Britannia

1 Church Road,
Barking,
IG11 8PR

Although this pub is neither listed nor on the London Regional Inventory, it is quite an interesting building. The exterior is described in Pevsner’s Buildings of England thus: “Along Church Road, some old-fashioned entertainment is provided by the Britannia pub, 1898 by F. W. Ashton with his trademark buxom termes. Half-timbering and turrets with pargetting to the walls.” Inside, the pub retains two separate bars: public and saloon, a bit of a rarity these days. Note the surviving gas lamp in the saloon bar.

The Britannia featured on the Daytime Crawl of Woodford Green, Barkingside, Ilford and Barking in June 2008.
