Although this pub is not on the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) National Inventory, the range of buildings in which the Royal Bell is situated is Grade II listed and the description is as follows: "Architect Ernest Newton. This range was rebuilt in 1898 on the site of an earlier hostelry of 1666. Four to five storeys red brick. Slate roof with nine pedimented dormers. Dropped modillion cornice. Three three-light bays with pargetting containing Neo-Jacobean motifs. Two one-light sashes; all with pargetting. One plain door and main doorcase with curved pediment supported on Roman Ionic half columns. Later shopfronts."
