Tesco store could replace historic George IV pub in Brixton
The George IV pub needs help to prevent it falling to the fate of so many historic pubs in the capital, that of being turned into a Tesco convenience store.
Tesco have applied to Lambeth council for permission to convert the pub but there is still time to make a difference and save the pub. The proposed changes would physically damage the character of the building. The pub lies within a conservation area and pub campaigners note that Tesco's plans would neither preserve nor enhance the conservation area.
In addition to its long heritage, the George IV has long been an important part of the local community, including having been cited as important in the development of dance music trend setters Basement Jaxx.
