Hat & Tun

3 Hatton Wall
Hatton Garden
EC1N 8HX

Like the George IV, the Marquis Cornwallis and the Lady Ottoline, this pub is not a listed building but it has an impressive carved wooden bar-back and a nice bar counter. At the far end of the pub there is a small marble fire surround with ceramic tiles. The fielded wooden wall panelling appears relatively modern. Note the glazed green bricks to the left of the bar-back which seem to indicate a former corridor so the bar-back may be a later addition after all. There is a door leading into the possible former corridor so it may have been an off-sales area as indicated by the illustrated sign saying “Wines & Spirits”. The pub was built by Hoare & Co, then from 1933 Charrington, from 1967 Bass Charrington, from 1998 Punch, by the late 2010s Punch Partnerships, and from 2017 it was sold in the large package to Star. It was originally called the Hat & Tun, then from 1999 Deux Beers until their lease was made available in 2004, then ETM since 2008 when it reverted to its former name, which may be a punning reference to the street name. It is a three-storey brick building with fancy white-painted stone window surrounds etc, a coaching arch, a black and white ground floor exterior with granite columns and capitals. ETM have done a nice job restoring a more traditional, quality feel. Up a few steps at the corner door to a medium-sized interior with a side bar. It has a cream Anaglypta ceiling, a thin pillar with a capital, cream walls, dark wood panelling on the dado except for the green glazed tiles by the door, dark wood under the big clear front windows and up to head height at the back, dark wood cladding the staircase opposite the bar which has more panelling under the original counter, and a dark carved wooden bar-back with classical top-piece. There are some Victorian hunting trophies and a portrait of Sir Christopher Hatton.

The Hat & Tun features on the A Hoare-ing We Shall Go: Evening Crawl of Hoare & Co Pubs on 21 August 2019.
