Directions to next pub: On leaving the pub, note to the left of the door, an old photograph of the Bakers Arms at the crossroads, now sadly no longer in pub use, although the Taylor Walker sign remains. Turn left out of the pub and walk along Lea Bridge Road to the pelican crossing. Cross over Lea Bridge Road, turn left and walk to the pelican crossing. Cross over High Road Leyton, turn right and, if you wish, walk into William the Fourth which will have been reopened by Exale Brewery of Walthamstow just two days before this pub tour. The William the Fourth has featured on London Pubs Group tours before so it will be interesting to see what Exale Brewery have done with it. The notes for the London Pubs Group tour which took place on 17 June 2023 describe the William the Fourth thus: “This pub is not a listed building but it is recognised by CAMRA’s London Region as having an historic interior of Local Importance. It is a prominent street-corner pub designed by the famous pub architects, Shoebridge & Rising. Features to note include the decorative tile panel in the High Road entrance door lobby and the marble-effect cast iron pillars which, with the remains of the glazed dividing screen, give an indication of the former layout of this otherwise thoroughly modernised pub. The bar counter and top seem to be original with a fairly unusual indentation. The rear room, probably formerly for billiards, has a skylight with plain clear glazing that contrasts with the more recent exposed brickwork and kitchen servery.”
At the time of writing, it is not known what beers will be available. Note the old Ind Coope sign outside, sadly lacking its picture. On leaving the William the Fourth, continue along High Road Leyton to bus stop SL (called Leyton Green). Catch a 69 or 97 bus to stop J (called Leyton Library).
